heyyyy
A quick but solid stack for you this week as we pack our suitcases for trips back home and lubricate our emotional toolkits for a week of intense use.
I was recently mulling over how to style this Banana Republic wool skirt for holiday, as I too (over) pack my duffle. To no ones surprise, the mission was a success considering this is the most worn piece in my entire closet - I can pair it with virtually anything & will always feel fully represented/ confident/ comfortable/ chic (hello, POV piece). The skirt isn’t in stores anymore, but I found it on posh here.
After much deliberation & in the spirit of rejuvenation in the new year, I felt it was time to give the other very promising candidates in my closet a fair chance.
But I didn’t want to lose sight of the original vision. As I dissected the very many details of what I love so much about this skirt (the line, & design at top of mind), I realized I can recreate a similar illusion through the layering of other pieces- specifically with shift dresses.
& born was this multifaceted but easy to follow formula.
Part 1: 1 light (summer) piece + 2 weighted (winter) pieces + 1 sparkly, overtly holiday piece or accessory (think rich colors, velvety textures, sparkle or visit here for inspo).
Part 2: shift dress + bottoms + outerwear + shoe + optional holiday accessory (if the other parts don’t speak to the occasion)
That might have been confusing, but here is what the formula looks like in practice:
What makes this so special IMO is the intentionally in reincorporating our summer pieces for the most quintessential winter event. There are a few reasons for it.
This really is the goal at the end of the day, to have our closets work for us year round and contribute to our Style POV even in “off seasons”.
Layering can feel bulky & burdensome, especially as our eye approaches the lower third of our look. Intentionally incorporating lighter items (in weight & color) creates a healthy balance aesthetically & easeful movement functionally.
So that’s the formula. Might be an acquired taste, but in fact my taste.
I hope at the very least this inspires you to think beyond the constrictions of how your pieces are “supposed to be worn”.
Understanding & sharpening your style POV can lead to closet breakthroughs that show you the full scope & depth that lies in what you already have.
