you should be dressing uglier pt.2
you'll never look cool until you're willing to upset someone
Hellooooo - I have a loaded newsletter for you today- some links and some style insights based on client convos over the last few weeks. Let’s get into itttt.
Most of my clients are Entrepreneurs or Creative Personal Brands who want to use clothing as a means to express themselves authentically.
They want to do this for many reasons, including representing their Personal Brand strongly & confidently to attract opportunities (last week one of my clients got stopped on the street by BEYONCÉ’s photographer(!!!) to tell her that he liked her outfit), while lessening their consumption and shopping more mindfully.
They’re over trend chasing, using Pinterest’s one-dimensionally curated boards to influence their #OOTDs, and replicating others’ style. They want to achieve a strong sense of originality and personality through their personal style but don’t really know what steps to take first- so I will always start by reminding them this…
SEEKING VALIDATION FROM OTHERS WILL BE THE DEATH OF YOUR PERSONAL STYLE.
It’s only human to want to fit in, to be accepted, and to feel safe- but what makes someone stand out through their style is actually fighting against the grain- and possibly looking weird (to some).
The Now Gorgeous but it really beautifully in a recent tiktok, “To eventually be perceived as glamorous and cool you have to go through a phase of people perceiving you as weird and awkward and possibly a bit out of place... if you’re constantly following the zeitgeist, you’re always going to be one step behind, like if everything you wear, you’ve waited for someone else to wear it to kind of let you know that it’s okay to wear that thing you want… you’re always going to be the second person to have done it”.
So how do we “beat” the trend game and stop dressing like everyone else so that we can feel more like our true selves? We stop playing, listening, and caring about it.
We choose to tap into our natural proclivities, behaviors, and interests and use those as guiding principals to shape our personal style. We stop sizing ourselves up against others and learn to trust our instincts and intuition when we get dressed. We become aware of our Style Point of View and say no more than yes to impulse purchases, compulsive closet clean outs, and other behaviors driven by insecurity and confusion.
Shifting from people-pleasing to self-guided personal style alone is no easy feat. If you’re looking for 1:1 hands on guidance from an expert Personal Stylist, book a discovery call with me and see what my clients are saying here.
Now for some recent favorite online finds of the last few weeks shopping for my lovely gals.
